II had to run a quick errand and decided to steal my mom’s brand new Crosstrek to check it out. Plugged in my phone, fired up Android Auto, and instantly regretted it. Android Auto is a beautiful thing and the Corolla won’t have it. I am now super annoyed by this fact.

Babymetal is my jam. Such a good energy.
I'm going to see them in September and the hype levels are through the roof.

The fact that I was able to push a button on the steering wheel, yell at it to play a song with a Japanese title, get that title wrong because I don’t speak a word of Japanese, and then have it figure out what I wanted and play them song anyway blew my mind.
The Corolla is going to have Car Play but not Android Auto. I need to buy a new phone anyway (current phone doesn't have the radios to support Verizon and Verizon is the only carrier with signal at my new place) so I could just get an iPhone but I'm not too interested in switching away from Android.

Didn’t one of them have to quit touring for health reasons?
Where are they playing?

Yui -metal stopped touring in 2017 and officially left at the end of last year. Apparently she’s now working on a solo project within Japan.
They are doing a US tour though October 16th with a bunch of venues. I’m going to the show in Boston on the 11th.

It’s been buggy for some but I love it. There’s a new version coming soon

In AAs current state I completely agree. I'm just not sure if I would enjoy having an iPhone as my phone.

I have been on Android for the entire time I have owned a smartphone so I'm just used to going to the notifications shade for media controls and quick settings, having widgets, being able to put icons wherever I want on the home screen, etc. I'm also not too keen on Apples current hardware.

That’s tough. I’m the same way with Carplay. Use it everyday and love it. Don’t know if I could spend new car money and not have AA/CP.
How’d you like the Crosstrek? They sell a TON in my area but the low power/CVT combo kills it for me.

No built-in Android Auto in my car, though I’m pleased to report that after upgrading to the S10 from my old S7, the app version is no longer dog slow and I don’t have to wait several minutes for everything to boot up (though the autolaunch on Bluetooth seems not to be working).

I only have one experience with Android Auto, and while it was incredibly well implemented, I found a major flaw: it didn’t play nice with my music app. I don’t know wether to blame the app (Napster) or Android Auto itself. I could call up the app just fine but there was no way to just browse or play my whole music library. I could play favorited tracks, as well as my personal Top 50 tracks that the app tracks, but I couldn’t just "play all"

It and it’s Impreza sibling are very nice, a massive improvement over the previous generation. The interior is nice and it is very quiet inside, though the CVT does some strange things that my Sisters 2012 Impreza doesn’t do.
I drove an Impreza sport in the spring and it was my #1 choice for a new car until I tried the Corolla Hatch.

Napster is still a thing?
Its up to the app developer to implement AA for their app. Spotify actually let's you navigate through all your Playlist and choose songs at will (at least when in Park).

They do look so much better in the inside on the new ones. I get the appeal.
Have you considered an Elantra GT N-Line? Similar price to Corolla hatch with a little more power and AndroidAuto.

I’m strongly in the camp of Apple for mobile devices. Computers are a different story, but their mobile devices have treated me well since I jumped in with the iPod Mini in 2004. I iPhone 5 lasted 6 years before I replaced it with a 7. The 5 still works, but it could use a new battery.

Napster went legit but was then bought out by Rhapsody. A couple years ago Rhapsody merged with iHeartRadio and was rebranded back to Napster.

Android auto is the absolute jam. I put a S ony touchscreen headunit in my gf’s ES300 with android auto for me and apple carplay for her. I cannot wait for the 2020 Lexus’ to receive their updated touchscreens with android auto. RX will come first, most other models will follow. It is ridiculous it has taken them this long to go touchscreen+andro id auto

Toyota seems to be dragging their feet on AA. I'm hoping the 2020 Corolla hatch will get it and that the 19s can get it through an update.

I’ll be totally honest: I really dont understand the appeal of AA or ACP... I have a crappy base screen in my work truck with bluetooth, so I can make calls, listen to voicemails, read texts/reply, play music ... What other functions does one need for their phones while driving?

Google maps on the head unit, actual good voice commands, it reads you your notifications, better control of streaming apps like Spotify, etc. And that's just the stuff I've discovered in 30 miles.

the coming re-design of Android Auto looks like it will be significantly better. certain things about the current iteration make me think that most of the people developing it don’t actually drive.

to me, “free” navigation is the big one. plus, I have about 90 GB of music on my iPhone; and most aftermarket head units out there would be dreadfully slow trying to plod through that library. the Music app on the phone keeps it all neatly indexed and fast to search through.

Well I’m even more in the minority here, because I just use an old iPod to USB , and even the radio. It may also be true that the most recent album on my iPod is 8 years old or so.
I think I’m both cheap and lazy.

not only that, it’s the way stuff is arranged within “apps.” I listen to several podcasts, so with CarPlay I just tap the “Podcasts” app and the list of latest downloads appears. with AA I had to tap the “Music” icon, then in the app tap the hamburger menu, then select Podcasts, then find the one I wanted to play.

Trick with AA, tapping the icon at the bottom while already in a music or navigation app will bring up the list of apps in that category. So instead of tap music, tap burger menu it becomes tap music twice.

I know that for the Lexus’, the android auto will not be an upgrade option for any of our 2019 cars. The new system adds a touchscreen to the display, in addition to the mouse controls they already have. The screens are also much closer to the driver so that they're reachable from the drivers seat. The update requires the touchscreen interface, which is incredibly stupid.

The Toyota side of things is already all touchscreens with Car Play so it should only be a software changes to introduce AA.

I ran google maps on my CarPlay screen for about 5 minutes. Then, I realized that I can’t pinch-to-zoom on the dashboard screen. Then, I went back to my trusty phone mount and ran google maps on my phone’s screen.

right, but I should have been more specific- I was using the google play app for music, podcasts, and some other things. that’s why I was futzing with menus. but it didn’t really matter, ‘cos back then the way they handled music through Android auto was just so goddamned hare-brained that I went back to an iPhone.
